With its 220km of pristine oceans and coastline, iSimangaliso lives up to its name which means “miraculous” in Zulu. When apartheid ended it was not a wildlife park, people had been forcibly removed from living there and the government had used it for missile testing. Yet through the restoration of nature and restitution of people, it is now a world heritage site with over 6,500 plant and animal species. The local community works in partnership with the park, conserving and protecting their natural heritage, while the park directly generates over 9,000 jobs.
